Alhampton Open Gardens

approx 9 gardens open Alhampton, near Castle Cary, Somerset
Sunday 8th June 2025
1.00pm to 5.00pm

Our gardens range from the formal to the blousy, from gravel gardens to lush planting, to others that are simply beautiful, all hoping to welcome you.

Our two famous gardeners - Charles Dowding, author of many books on organic gardening, has appeared on Gardener's World, writes for various publications and is known internationally for his no-dig method of vegetable growing, and Gert Schley, whose organic and highly individual approach to mixing produce and decorative planting is unique and beautiful, are both open again.

The first and last gardens on the trail are both very large; amongst other things, one has some beautiful formal areas along with an orchard; the other has some deep borders and a large informal pond. Our other gardens are an eclectic mix which we hope you’ll enjoy.

If you arrive early, please leave our gardeners in peace to make their final preparations. You’ll be most welcome at our lovely pub, the Alhampton Inn, now being run by the community. If you’d like to stop there for Sunday lunch, do please book.

You’re also invited to look round Haddon Wood; our main parking is in the orchard of the wood. There are 28 acres to explore, with two large picnic benches in case you’ve brought a packed lunch. You’ll find a large pond with nesting moorhens, two wild beehives, and great views from the top of the hill.

Whilst the wood is owned by the Woodland Trust, a local volunteer group does a great deal of maintenance work, and the proceeds from Open Gardens go towards the upkeep of, and events in the wood. The orchard is also the place to buy your entry programme for the gardens along with Haddon Wood merchandise.

As usual our brilliant bakers will be cooking up a feast to offer fantastic afternoon teas at two venues - even if you're not a gardener, it's worth a visit for that alone.

We hope you enjoy your visit and look forward to welcoming you.
